While in the case of unmarried heterosexual couples who have become parents through a sperm donation, the father can acknowledge paternity immediately after the birth, German law still places obstacles in the way of lesbian couples. For example, the woman who gave birth to the child is initially considered the single mother. The co-mother has to adopt the child in order to get the same rights (and obligations) as her wife.
How do lesbian couples go about dealing with this challenge? How openly do they deal with the issue of sperm donation? Journalist Hilde Weeg met Anne and Sabine and spoke with them about their experiences.
