Why become a donor

One in seven couples in Germany experience infertility. By donating your sperm you can help couples and single women to start a family. It is important that you are aware that you will not be able to find out the identity of the offspring resulting from your donation. However, we will be happy to inform you on the number and gender of the children conceived from your donation.

In the case of medical sperm donation, social aspects should be the primary motivation. We deliberately do not offer sperm donors any financial incentives other than the expense allowance.

Requirements

At the Erlanger Samenbank, the health status of all persons involved in sperm donation treatment is our utmost priority. Sperm donors must therefore meet high standards – physically, mentally and socially.

In oder to be a sperm donor, we require an above-average number of motile and morphologically normal sperm, as samples must maintain their integrity through freezing, thawing, storing and testing.

The number of sperm available for fertilisation decreases to varying degrees after thawing. Therefore, not every healthy man who is able to conceive naturally is suitable for sperm donation. In addition to sperm quality, there are other important requirements for sperm donation.

Our doctors assess the general personality and character maturity of the donor candidates. A physical examination is also carried out to rule out possible diseases of the reproductive organs.

If you are rejected by us as a donor, this does not usually mean that your natural fertility is impaired. Overall, only one in seven applicants is suitable as a sperm donor. Regardless of the result: Your willingness to donate is valuable in itself.

If we select you as a donor for the Erlanger Samenbank, you must not be registered as a donor with another sperm bank or act as a private sperm donor.

Allowance for expenses

Sperm donation is a social, voluntary service that is not paid for. As with blood donation, the focus is on the “good deed”. For this reason, donors do not receive any remuneration for donating sperm. Only an expense allowance is paid as financial compensation for the time spent. The amount of compensation is carefully chosen to ensure that you receive appropriate compensation without being solely financially incentivized. The Erlanger Samenbank pays an expense allowance of 100 Euros to all donors who appear for a first trial donation.

A further 130 Euros isprovided for each additional donation of a suitable sperm sample. Thereby, 50 Euros will be paid out promptly, with a further 80 Euros paid out given the blood results are clear at the end of the donation cycle after 6 months following the submission of the last sperm sample. With a donation cycle of six donations, sperm donors are compensated 780 Euros by the Erlanger Samenbank if the samples are deemed suitable.  Depending on requirements and blood group, further cycles can be carried out afterwards.

The sperm donation process

Sperm donation is not a one-off process, but involves an entire donation cycle of usually at least six suitable sperm donations. The first donation cycle can be followed by further donation cycles, each with six sperm donations.
